Begonia Plants

Begonia plants are one of summer’s most delicate looking flowers. The soft colors of the petals make this plant look simply gorgeous. My favorite colors of this flower are the soft pinks, and of course the light peach ones. I always know summer is near when I start to see them blooming. While some begin to grow in the spring, they are definitely a summer flower. They are often used in gardens or in containers or as houseplants. I love them anyhow, anywhere!

If you are planning on having begonia plants out in your flower garden, they thrive in shady areas. If they are around too much sun, they will not live as long. Now this flower is an annual. So if you want to see this beautiful plant year after year, you will need to replant new ones each year.

There are two different kinds of this plant. There are wax begonias, and tuberous begonias.

The wax kind of the plant come in colors of pink, red, and white. They grow to be about 6 to 12 inches high! Wax Begonias grow all throughout the summer. They must get their name due to the leaves. They are a dark green color and have a glossy look to them. Some of the leaves also have a bronze look to them.

If you choose to grow them, you can either start by seeds or you can use already cut ones. Start growing the seeds inside during the winter. When spring comes, you can transfer the plant outside to your garden. Space them about 6 to 12 inches apart in a spot with some shade.

If your begonia plant is still living by the beginning of fall, dig up the plants, or cut them, and bring them indoors and they should last inside until the winter.

Tuberous begonias grow from the middle of summer until the beginnings of fall. They can grow from 8 to 18 inches tall. They are slightly bigger then wax begonias.

While the wax species can be in some sun, this kind cannot. Only plant them in areas with a lot of shade.

To grow the tuberous plants, you must plant bulbs. They do not grow from seeds. You can begin planting them in the winter. You must start them indoors though. Find a well-drained potting soil, and plant the bulbs in the soil, in a pot.

Be careful not to cover the tuber with too much soil. They only need to be barely covered. Water it enough just to keep the soil moist.

Once the weather begins to warm up, and the frost is gone you may then transfer the begonia plant outdoors. To keep your plant growing and healthy all season, fertilize it every so often. About once a month should be fine.

When the fall comes, you can dig up the begonia bulbs and store them inside, until you are ready to start the whole process over.

Bee Balm

Bee Balm (Monarda) is a perennial plant that grows from midsummer to the beginning of fall. There are 15 different species of this flower, and some are known to be annuals.

When planted, they will grow in clumps. These clumps will spread out and you will have a lovely garden. This plant grows very brightly colored flowers. Perfect for the summertime. As we all know, summer is the perfect time for bold, bright colors.

From the stems, colors of purple, pink, red and white will sprout off the tops of the stems. Growing along with the beautiful colors of the blossoms are dark green leaves.

The leaves sometimes have a hint of red or purple to them. When you break the leaves and crush them, you will smell a little bit of mint.

Monarda flowers are perennials and they will live for about three years. Dig and divide certain sections of the plant every 2 to 3 years to promote extended growth.

In order for Monarda to grow, it needs to be planted in moist soil. Plant Bee Balm it in shady spots because if you plant them in areas of sun, the soil will dry out. They need to be in moist soil to grow.

After you have found a place in the shade with very moist soil, plant Monarda flowers in the soil at about 3 inches deep. If you use mulch to cover the hole, the soil will have a better chance at staying moist.

As I’ve said before, this particular flower will spread. To keep it from spreading to wildly, you will need to hold it back. Try digging some of the plant up from the roots. The roots grow horizontally and that is how it spreads.

If it gets to hot in the summer and you see the soil becoming a little to dry, just water it as much as it needs and it should be fine.

Once you know where you are going to plant your flower, let it flourish and enjoy the beauty this plant really brings!

Basket of Gold

Basket of Gold (Aurinia Saxatilis) is a type of perennial. This means you can plant it once, and it will grow back year after year.

This is a plant that grows very full and lush. It looks great as a border plant for edging around your spring gardens. If you plant the seeds about 12 inches apart you will have a gorgeous garden full of these beautiful yellow flowers.

The color of this plant is a bright yellow, gold color hence the name. It really does brighten up any spring garden.

When growing Aurinia make sure your soil is very well drained. After all, this is a very rugged flower and can live in even the worst of droughts.

The flowers needs lots of sunlight. Do not plant it near any trees. Find a spot in your yard that gets the most sunlight, and you’ll have the most luck getting them to grow.

Aurinia actually grows best in the mountains. They are a popular plant to grow in rock gardens. They can grow to be anywhere from 6 to 12 inches tall.

It needs to be planted in the fall in order to grow in the spring. As I have said before, plant the seeds about 12 inches apart because they need space to grow.

You can also grow this plant by tip cutting. Cut the tips around the end of spring to the beginning of summer. Then plant the cultivars about 4 inches apart.

Aurinia Saxatilis does not need much to survive, other then plenty of sunlight. When you water them, do not water too much, as your plant will drown, and you certainly wouldn’t want that.

This is such a pretty plant to add to your garden and it is definitely a low maintenance plant, which is always nice. It will eventually grow to be a large beautiful addition to your garden.

Baby’s Breath

Baby’s Breath (Gypsophila) begins to grow in the middle of summer. Being a perennial, this plant will grow again each summer.

Everyone has seen this flower before. It is the tiny delicate looking white, and sometimes pink, flowers that are commonly added to flower arrangements. Especially roses.

They are tiny white flowers that grow on a long thin stem, with green leaves. Many tiny flowers adjourn each stem. They are usually clumped together to resemble little clouds.

Gypsophila is used as a filler flower to many different flower arrangements. It adds a bit of beauty and delicacy to the different arrangements.

The flower belongs to a genus of over 100 different species.

While they can be used as a garden plant, they are more commonly used as cut flowers. If someone is growing them in their garden, they could be using them as cut flowers to add to their centerpieces.

In order to grow this filler flower, you need to have soil with good drainage. To promote a better drainage system, gather the soil into a small mound. Make a hole at the top of the pile and put in your plant to start it’s growth.

Make sure that wherever you pick to plant the flower that that is where you want it to stay. It grows very large roots that are hard to uproot. If you must move it, dig the plant up in the beginning of spring.

When the flower begins to grow, put stakes around the plant so that it grows upright. When you see spots that have died in the plant, cut them out so that the plant with grow again.

Autumn Snowflake

Autumn Snowflake (Leucojum) grows in many different cultivars that grow in the spring, summer and fall. It reminds me of winter’s snowdrop with the drooping of the stems.

The difference is that these white flowers open. They are tiny white bell shaped flowers that dangle off of the ends of their branches.

This flower doesn’t grow too tall; reaching about 7-8 inches in height. The blossoms grow along with skinny stems and small leaves that resemble grass. The stems grow straight up tilting slightly to one side.

At the edges of the stems grow the tiny drooping flowers. They look very pretty and dainty hanging off of their stems. I seem to think of wedding bells whenever I see this plant!

Plant your Snowflake bulbs in light, sandy soil that is somewhat rich. They will grow in either sun or partial shade. Do not plant them in areas with constant shade as they need the sun.

Dig a hole about 4 inches deep to plant your bulbs in. Space each bulb at least 4 inches apart because they need the room to grow.

Once you have planted the bulbs, they really do not need much care. They are a perennial plant that will grow back year after year. You can divide the plant every few years if you think they need it, but they should last a long time without needing to be divided.

I really like this plant for my fall garden because they are very easy to grow, and also because they make a great addition to my flower beds. I also like to use them as a border for certain beds.

Whatever you decide to do with your Leucojum plant, I am sure you will enjoy it!
