Christmas Cactus plant (Schlumbergera) is a wonderful blooming plant that grows in the winter.

The flower is a very beautiful winter flower. On each stem hangs a brightly colored trumpet shaped flower. The flowers come in shades of reds and pinks. Some grow to be white.

When this plant begins to grow, the stems first grow straight up and down. Then, as they grow longer, they begin to droop over. Not in a bad way! It actually makes the plant look sort of elegant.

The stems are not your typical rounded shape. They grow in a flat shape.

The leaves grow in a light green shade and have teeth on the edges. The teeth on the edges are not small and close. They are slightly bigger and are spaced a little ways apart.

Plant Christmas Cactus in well-drained potting soil. A mixed potting soil will benefit the plant the most.

Take Care of Christmas Cactus all all year by keeping it in sun light during the day and in a darker spot at night. They do not like to be in cool spots though. Keep your plant in a room with warmer temperatures.

Not a spot that is too hot, maybe in a room with temperatures around 65 – 70 degrees.

While each flower does not live very long, the plant is constantly setting buds so that the plant will just keep growing new flowers over and over again

You can get away with only watering this plant about once a week. Sometimes maybe every other week. When you see the leaves beginning to look shriveled, water it!

If the plant every stops growing, it is just because the plant needs to rest. Don’t worry; it will begin to grow soon. Water it a little bit, and regrowth will resume.

China Aster

China Aster (Callistephus) is a flower that resembles a daisy, but only has one species. It is primarily grown in China. They are annuals that have a long blooming period.

They begin to bloom in the middle of summer and can continue to grow all the way through to the first frost.

They bloom in summer shades of blue, purple, pink, red, and white. The leaves they grow are a vivid green and have toothed edges.

When you start to plant the seeds for your flower, you have two options.

You can plant the seeds indoors at about 6 weeks before the last frost, or you can grow the seeds outdoors when there is no longer a danger for frost.

Plant your seed in rich moist soil in an area that receives full sun. Space the seeds about 1 to 1 1/2 feet apart. Water the plant during times of drought or dry spells.

Since asters are prone to various diseases, do not plant the asters in the same spots year after year. This will help your plants to be disease free.

Carnation Flower

The Carnation flower (Dianthus Caryophyllus) is one of the more popular flowers that everyone recognizes. They are the typical staple to almost any flower arrangement. Not only do they look very pretty, they smell really good too.

A member of the Dianthus family, Carnations come in both annual and perennial form. They come in many different colors, but the most popular flowers are red, pink and white.

They are used for many different purposes and occasions. Many people use them as wedding flowers in their wedding bouquets because they are a cheaper priced flower that last for a long time.

Because this flower has a longer then usual life span it is also a popular choice for boutonnieres and corsages. Think back to your prom, you most likely wore a carnation that night.

This flower is also a popular addition in flower bouquets you may send to a friend or a loved one.

Mother’s day is a holiday where these flowers are very popular. I know that I used to work at a place that would give all the customers who were mothers a pink or white carnation for Mother’s Day.

Some say the different colors of the carnations have different special meanings. For example the red, pink and white ones all mean you care for someone. If you give someone a yellow one, it usually means disappointment.

A Carnation flower arrangement is a popular choice for occasions and holidays because they can easily be dyed. I have seen green ones for St. Patrick’s Day, blue ones for a baby shower, and even orange dyed ones for Halloween.

They are a very versatile flower that can be used for all sorts of reasons.

Growing Carnations is simple. Start to plant the seeds in the soil at the beginning of spring. They only need to be about 1/4 of an inch into the ground. Cover them with soil and don’t let them get to wet.

When you plant these flowers make sure they have full sun and well-drained soil. They don’t do well in soil that is too wet. Only water them when the soil is too dry or when in a drought.

Once they begin to grow they can reach about 18 inches high. You can cut these flowers and bring them inside and place them in a bouquet. They make a great centerpiece and they live for a long time.

If you choose not to cut them and to just let them grow in your garden, they will grow well throughout the summer.

I think that everyone should plant Carnations in their gardens. Not just because they are so easy to grow, but also because they add some real beauty to your garden. They look great and they smell really nice.

Cape Primrose

Cape Primrose (Streptocarpus) is an indoor plant that most people keep during the cold winter months. While they can grow year round, they are most popular as a winter flower. I guess it brings a little bit of spring to the dampness of winter.

This plant is very easy to grow. Once you plant the seeds in a pot you like, be sure to water it regularly. It is best to let the soil dry up a little bit and then water the plant. Don’t let it get too dry. You just don’t want to drown it.

Streptocarpus Plants grow well in the winter time because it likes to grow in cooler temperatures. Not so cool that you try to grow it outdoors, a cool spot in your home will do just fine.

In order to really thrive, the plant needs to be round sunlight for at least 12 hours a day. Just don’t place it in direct sunlight because you don’t want to fry it.

When you are picking a pot to grow your Streptocarpus in, pick a pot with holes in the bottom and place it on a dish. You want to make sure the plant has good drainage but also maintains moisture.

Now, let’s talk about how pretty this plant looks. Being a relative of the African Violet this plant also has tubular shaped flowers.

They grow to be a delicate looking as the flowers on the violet. They come in more of a variety of colors then the African Violet. You can grow the Primrose in white, blue, violet, pink or red.

These flowers grow on a tall thin stem. Usually about 10 inches long. The leaves that grow along with the flowers are wide and light green. The leaves are bigger than the flower head.

Just wait and see how large this indoor plant can be! From what starts out as a tiny seedling really grows into a nice sized house plant.

Candytuft (Iberis Umbellata) is a very delicate looking flower. They can be a perennial or an annual. The perennial kind comes in delicate white flowers, while the annual type can come in white, pink, or lavender.

The annual versions look sort of flat on top. They almost look like little clusters of umbrellas covering the foliage beneath them.

They bloom in the spring and can continue to grow into the summer.

Perennial types do not last as long. They usually grow near the end of spring into the beginning of summer. They resemble little snowballs on top of green leaves.

This flower is good to be used as an edging flower. Think of a walkway leading to your home bordered with Iberis. Or you could use it as a border in your flowerbed.

Whether you choose the annuals or the perennials, it is a great pick to frame your spring gardens. The decision is yours. Do you want flowers that bloom once, but last for a long time? Or do you want short-lived flowers that reappear every year.

To make sure your perennial grows back every year, cut back your plant towards the end of spring. Take a pair of garden shears and trim back your plant so it will grow again the following year.

Growing them is quite simple. Plant either your seeds, or your plants about 6 inches apart in well-drained soil.

They grow best in areas with a lot of sun, and will grow to be about 6 to 12 inches tall. The only maintenance they require is watering when needed, and the occasional weeding.

They do not need to be watered constantly. If the soil starts to look too dry, then they need to have water. They can stand to be in dry soil for a short time, but they need some water to survive.

It is recommended to plant Iberis them in the beginning of spring. Then for the rest of the season you will have pretty flowers to look at.

Whether you choose the perennial kind, or the annual kind, your spring garden will look fabulous!
